Test Your Wits with Co-op Pub Trivia
By Liz McMann
The lights are dim at the local pub, and the chatter hums like bees buzzing around a hive. Every table is filled. Suddenly, all goes quiet and even the folks who have already had a few beers mentally sharpen their pencils and get ready for the quiz. It’s time for pub trivia.
This June, in honor of the International Year of Cooperatives, local food co-ops are teaming up to offer pub trivia all over the greater metro area. From Uptown to Northfield, quiz masters will be posing questions related to cooperatives and sustainable food and giving out prizes provided by local co-ops.
“We are excited to partner with Trivia Mafia and other hosts to present local co-op-inspired trivia nights across the Twin Cities. These trivia games will test your wits and promote cooperation, which we love!” said Luna McIntyre, marketing manager at Eastside Food Co-op.
Pub trivia may have started out as minor entertainment for bar patrons during slow weeknights, but it has become an attraction in its own right, drawing crowds of people to their neighborhood pubs to test their knowledge and win prizes. Far from the likes of Alex Trebek, Twin Cities trivia hosts like Trivia Mafia are hip, cheeky and typically enjoying beers along with the crowd. The subject matter can range anywhere from the origins of the washing machine to a “name that booty” picture round featuring (you guessed it), famous posteriors.
“Trivia has really exploded in the last couple of years in the Twin Cities, which is to be expected because bar-goers in this town fit right into that sweet spot in the Venn diagram of people who are smart and read a lot and people who like to go out and meet people and have fun,” says Chuck Terhark, cofounder of Trivia Mafia.
Indeed, that sounds like a lot of co-op shoppers as well.
If pub trivia is new to you, there is no need to worry. There is no studying required and no shame in missing questions. There is shame in pulling out your smart phone during trivia, though. No cheating is allowed! The idea is to have fun and learn a little.
Chuck assures us, “We have a lot of trivia players who would be the first to tell you that they aren’t any good at trivia. They just love playing along and learning something new and laughing at the hosts. We also give prizes to the losers sometimes, so that helps.”
