Co-ops Statewide Rally for FoodShare's March Campaign
This year, fifteen Minnesota food co-ops helped replenish the food shelves in our respective neighborhoods. The collaborative effort paid off – we raised 100,271 dollars/pounds of food for the Minnesota FoodShare March Campaign. For the past several years, the Twin Cities food co-ops have participated in Minnesota FoodShare's March Campaign, a program of the Greater Minneapolis Council of Churches that provides funds, food and educational materials to over 300 food shelves across the state. This year, the Twin Cities stores joined forces with other Minnesota food co-ops - for an even bigger impact on Minnesotans.
A Healthy Curriculum
The recent focus on improving childhood eating habits is old news to a handful of Twin Cities natural foods cooperatives. Six co-ops support the Midwest Food Connection (MFC), a Minneapolis nonprofit that sends natural-food educators into elementary school classrooms with lessons that leave a healthy impression.
Lakewinds Organic Field Fund
Lakewinds Natural Foods, with stores open in Minnetonka and Chanhassen and plans for a third location in Richfield, announced the recipients of its 2013 Lakewinds Organic Field Fund. The three groups will receive $22,000 collectively for a variety of projects including establishing organic grazing pastures for chicken and cattle, educating local farmers about in-demand crops like quinoa and spelt, and immigrant farmer training.
